The
1233AM transmitter to the south of Swindon was rebuilt in
March 2003, to give a stronger and clearer signal over Swindon
and the M4. This site was originally opened on 11 November
1993 to fill in a few holes from the main 1215AM service. Alex
Lakey, our chief engineer, takes us round it...
"The
site is a 33m high AD440 Alan Dick tower supporting a
Kintronics Labs Curtain. The site will have Virgin 1233 at
about 150 watts, and the BBC 1368 Wiltshire service at about
400 watts."
"These bay photos show the partially completed bay with
the HCD Research transmitter at the bottom. The Astra receiver
and some other stuff is missing, as it was still connected to
the temporary wire aerial."
"This is the combiner, and sums the RF for the Virgin and
BBC services, and rejects unwanted RF energy away from the
transmitters and away from the other frequencies (so we don't
radiate a BBC service and vice versa)."
